After receiving a series of good winter snows, the temperature began to rise and the snow turned to rain. At first the water stayed in the snow pack, but within a day or two the water system was receiving significant amounts of runoff.
When the water levels get really high it overflows a protective metal sheet and starts to erode the dam. I usually have the water levels under control, but water shocks like the one we experienced the other day happen from time to time.
The water flow was so high that the water level did not drop far enough to expose the outlet pipe.
